Dutch Elm Disease

Following a survey conducted by Edinburgh City Council last summer, we were notified that we have a total of 42 Elm trees infected by Dutch elm disease.

Most of the infected trees are in the vicinity of the Quarry practice ground and range from between 5 to 20mts in height.

This week we started felling and burning the timber from the diseased trees.

These measures are aimed not only at controlling the spread of the disease and to protect neighbouring trees, but equally importantly, at public safety.

Drainage Update - Hole 10

We have now installed 140 mts of new drainage pipe-work and refurbished another 80 mts of existing of drainage tracks.

Two new inspection chambers have also been constructed.

Provided the weather holds, we hope to have completed the final groundworks by the end of the week, ahead of next weeks turf delivery.

Some other facts and figures-

We started the project on December 5th, and have used 55 tonnes of grit and gravel, 35 tonnes of root-zone,
and when turfing has been completed, 600 m2 of turf will have been used.
Total man-hours 335 hrs, as at January 17th,

Woodland Management

Our arborists certainly had a busy time last week.

Not only did they trim the hedge at the 16th tee, but they also pruned and crown thinned a number of prominent trees on the courses.

Some safety work on the rock face behind the 10th yellow tee was also completed, this involved cutting back some of the overhanging branches.

Happy New Year

May I take this opportunity on behalf of all the Greenstaff in wishing the membership of both clubs a Happy New Year and let’s hope this year, is considerably drier than 2012.

This week we have our tree surgeon contractors on site and today they began hedge- cutting operations at the 16th tee.
